Key Terms and Definitions

Classification
The process of grouping organisms according to their similarities and differences.
Taxonomy
The field of biology that deals with classifying organisms.
Taxon (plural: taxa)
Each unit or rank used in the classification of living things, e.g. kingdom, phylum, species.
Species
A group of closely related organisms that can interbreed under natural conditions and produce fertile offspring.
Binomial nomenclature
A scientific system of naming organisms using a two-part Latin name: the genus and the specific epithet.

Spotlight

Scientists estimate that there could be as many as 8.7 million species of living things on Earth, yet fewer than 2 million have actually been named and described so far! Classification gives biologists a shared system to keep discovering, naming, and organising the millions of species still unknown to science.
